Youth Day is a public holiday in South Africa on 16 June. It commemorates the Soweto uprising of 1976, when students protested against the imposition of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in their schools and police opened fire on them. Hector Pieterson, a schoolboy killed that day, became a symbol of the uprising. The day honours the role of young people in the struggle against apartheid, and June is observed as Youth Month.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, everyone, and welcome. I'm {Your name} from {School or organisation}. We are here to mark Youth Day, and to remember the young people who stood up for the right to learn, and for the dignity of everyone in this country. - THE STUDENTS OF SOWETO2 / 4
On 16 June 1976, thousands of students in Soweto marched against having Afrikaans imposed as a language of instruction in their schools. Police opened fire. Among those killed was a schoolboy, Hector Pieterson, whose photograph became known around the world. In the weeks that followed, protests spread across the country. - A YOUNG VOICE3 / 4
Those students were the same age as many people in this room. So it is right that a young person speaks to us today. Please give your full attention to {Student speaker's name}.
[STUDENT SPEAKER TO LECTERN] - A QUIET MOMENT4 / 4
Thank you. Before we leave, let us take a moment of quiet to honour the courage of the young people of 1976, and to think about what we owe the young people of today.
[A MOMENT OF QUIET REFLECTION]
Thank you all for being here.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- June is Youth Month in South Africa, so this script also suits events held throughout June. If you are not speaking on 16 June itself, change 'today' accordingly.
- The well-known photograph of Hector Pieterson can be upsetting, especially for younger pupils. If you show it, introduce it calmly and give the audience a moment.
- Give young people real roles on the day: host, reader or speaker. Help the student speaker prepare, and keep adult speeches short so a young voice is the one remembered.
- Accounts of how many people died in 1976 vary, so avoid quoting figures. Keep the language factual and respectful, and leave applause out of the reflective moments.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
