World Environment Day, held every year on 5 June, encourages people, communities and organisations to protect the environment and live more sustainably. The United Nations General Assembly established it in 1972, the year of the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, and it was first celebrated in 1973. Led by the UN Environment Programme, it has a different host country and theme each year. Typical activities include clean-ups, tree planting, school projects and public pledges.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, and welcome to World Environment Day at {Organisation}. I'm {Your name}. Before we begin, think for a moment of an outdoor place you love: a park, a river, a stretch of coast or a quiet garden. Hold that picture in your mind, because today is about protecting places like it. - WHY WE ARE HERE2 / 4
The United Nations created this day in 1972. Since then, people across the world have used it to clean beaches, plant trees and rethink everyday habits. The message is simple: a healthy planet depends on many small choices, made by many people, every single day. - OUR PLEDGE3 / 4
This year, {Organisation} has {Recent green project}, thanks to many of you. Now it's your turn. On your seat is a small card. Write one change you will make this month, such as walking more, refusing single-use plastic or saving energy, and hang it on our pledge tree.
[TWO MINUTES – AUDIENCE WRITE PLEDGES] - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you for every pledge on that tree. We'll keep them on display and check in next month to see how we're doing. Protecting the environment is not one day's work, but today is a good place to start. Please use the recycling points on your way out.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- The UN Environment Programme announces a host country and theme for each year's World Environment Day. Check the official announcement if you want to link your event to it.
- Practise what you preach: skip balloons, bottled water and printed handouts where possible, and tell the audience briefly how the event itself was kept low-waste.
- Replace the placeholder with one concrete local result, such as bags of litter collected or trees planted, and double-check any figure before you say it on stage.
- If the speech opens an outdoor clean-up or planting session, add a short safety briefing covering gloves, sharp objects, sun protection and where to meet afterwards.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
