Democracy Day is a public holiday in Nigeria on 12 June. It commemorates the presidential election of 12 June 1993, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the country's history, which was annulled before the final results were declared. The day honours the long struggle for democracy that followed. It was previously observed on 29 May, the date civilian rule returned in 1999, and has been held on 12 June since 2019.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} you are very welcome to this Democracy Day gathering. Today is a day to look back honestly, and to think about the kind of democracy we want to build together. - WHY THIS DATE2 / 4
On 12 June 1993, Nigerians went to the polls in a presidential election that many still regard as one of the freest in our history. That election was annulled, and civilian rule did not return until 1999. Today we honour everyone who kept faith with democracy through those years. - OUR PANEL3 / 4
Democracy is more than one day at the ballot box. It lives in our courts, our newspapers, our community meetings and our conversations. To explore what it means today, please welcome our panel, chaired by {Moderator, title}.
[APPLAUSE – PANEL TAKES THE STAGE] - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you to our panel, and to all of you for your questions. As we leave, let each of us take one step for our democracy this year: check our voter registration, join a community meeting, or listen to someone we disagree with. Happy Democracy Day.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Many Nigerians associate the day with Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 election. Mention him factually if it suits your audience, and avoid commentary on current politicians or parties.
- Official events in Nigeria often open with the national anthem and the National Pledge. Add them before the welcome if your audience expects them.
- Some older calendars and materials still show 29 May as Democracy Day. Make sure your invitations, slides and banners use 12 June.
- Give the panel a clear brief: a mix of ages, a moderator who keeps time, and questions about citizenship and public life rather than party politics.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
