Swedish National Day speech template (Sweden)

Published 10 October 2026 · Date checked on 5 October 2026 · Written by the Cue Card Converter team at EventProgrammer, event production professionals

Sweden's National Day, Sveriges nationaldag, is celebrated on 6 June. The date recalls the election of Gustav Vasa as king in 1523 and the adoption of a new constitution in 1809. Long celebrated as Swedish Flag Day, it became the official national day in 1983 and a public holiday in 2005. Flags are raised across the country, the royal family takes part in celebrations at Skansen in Stockholm, and many municipalities hold ceremonies to welcome new citizens.

  1. VÄLKOMNA

  2. TWO DATES, ONE DAY
Today's date carries two stories. On 6 June 1523, Gustav Vasa was elected king, a moment often linked to the birth of modern Sweden. On the same date in 1809, a new constitution was adopted. For many years this was Swedish Flag Day, and the flag is still at the heart of the celebration.

  3. RAISING THE FLAG
I now invite {Flag bearer} to raise the Swedish flag. Please stand, and join in the national anthem, Du gamla, du fria, if you know the words.
[FLAG IS RAISED – NATIONAL ANTHEM]
    Thank you. Please be seated.

  4. THIS DAY BELONGS TO EVERYONE
Across Sweden today, towns also welcome their newest citizens. Whether your roots in Sweden go back generations or just a few months, this day belongs to you too. Thank you for coming, enjoy the early summer, and have a lovely National Day.
