Portugal Day, officially the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, is celebrated on 10 June. The date marks the death in 1580 of the poet Luís de Camões, author of the epic poem Os Lusíadas. The day honours the Portuguese language and culture and the many Portuguese communities living around the world. It is a public holiday, and the official celebrations, presided over by the President of the Republic, are held in a different city each year.

- WELCOME TO ALL1 / 4
Good afternoon, and welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and it's a joy to celebrate Portugal Day together. Whether your family comes from the Minho, the Algarve, the islands or nowhere near Portugal at all, you are part of this celebration today. - A POET AND A PEOPLE2 / 4
On 10 June 1580, the poet Luís de Camões died. His epic, Os Lusíadas, tells of Portuguese voyages across the oceans, and it is still read and studied today. So this is a day for literature, for the Portuguese language, and for every community that carries it around the world. - A READING AND MUSIC3 / 4
To hear Camões in his own language, please welcome {Reader's name}, who will read a short passage from Os Lusíadas.
[READING IN PORTUGUESE]
Obrigado. And now, some music that needs no translation.
[FADO OR FOLK MUSIC PERFORMANCE] - UNTIL NEXT YEAR4 / 4
Thank you to {Reader's name}, to our musicians and to everyone who helped prepare today. Wherever we live, the Portuguese language is something we share. Please stay, enjoy the afternoon, and say hello to someone you have not met before.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Mention the full official name, Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, at least once, so guests understand why a poet stands at the centre of a national day.
- In Portuguese, men say obrigado and women say obrigada. Adjust the thank-you in the third card to suit the host, and consider opening with a simple bom dia or boa tarde.
- Ask your reader to choose a single stanza from Os Lusíadas, and print a short English summary in the programme for guests who do not speak Portuguese.
- The official celebrations move to a different city each year. If you are abroad, check whether your embassy or consulate is holding an event, so you can avoid a clash or join forces.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
