Freedom Day, the Dia da Liberdade, is a public holiday in Portugal on 25 April. It commemorates the Carnation Revolution of 1974, when a military uprising ended decades of dictatorship and opened the way to democracy. The red carnation became its lasting symbol. The day is marked with a formal session in the Assembly of the Republic, a popular march along Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, concerts and local ceremonies across the country.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good afternoon, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} I'm delighted to see so many generations here to celebrate the Dia da Liberdade. Some of you remember the day itself; others know it from family stories, songs and school lessons. All of you are part of it today. - THE CARNATION REVOLUTION2 / 4
On 25 April 1974, a military uprising ended decades of dictatorship in Portugal. Crowds filled the streets, and red carnations appeared in the barrels of soldiers' rifles. That image gave the revolution its name. In the years that followed came free elections and a democratic constitution. - A CARNATION FOR EVERYONE3 / 4
Across Portugal today, people wear a red carnation. If you received one at the door, please pin it on now, or hold it up with us.
[GUESTS RAISE THEIR CARNATIONS]
Thank you. To celebrate with music, please welcome {Performer or choir}.
[MUSICAL PERFORMANCE] - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you to {Performer or choir} for that wonderful music. Freedom is something each generation receives and then has to look after, in everyday ways. Thank you all for celebrating with us. Please stay for refreshments, and keep your carnation as a reminder of this day.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Red carnations are the symbol of the day. Order enough for every guest, or at least buttonholes for the speakers; people recognise the gesture immediately.
- The song Grândola, Vila Morena was broadcast on the radio as a signal for the uprising and is often sung at commemorations. A choir or musician can perform it in the third card.
- Views on the revolution and the turbulent period that followed still differ between families and generations. Keep the script centred on freedom and democracy, and avoid party slogans or current politics.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
