Freedom Day is a public holiday in South Africa on 27 April. It marks the country's first democratic national election in 1994, the first in which adult South Africans of all racial groups could vote. Many voters queued for hours to cast their ballots, and the election led to Nelson Mandela becoming the first democratically elected president. The day is celebrated with official events, concerts, community gatherings and the national anthem.

- WELCOME1 / 5
Good afternoon, and a very warm welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and it is a joy to celebrate Freedom Day with all of you. Today we remember the day South Africans of every background stood in line together to vote. - WHY WE CELEBRATE2 / 5
On 27 April 1994, South Africa held its first democratic national election, open to adults of all races. For millions of people, it was the first time they had ever voted. Many queued for hours, and those long, patient queues became one of the defining images of the new South Africa. - THE NATIONAL ANTHEM3 / 5
Let us stand together, as the country did on that day, and sing our national anthem in its five languages.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. Please be seated. Now, a story from someone who was there. - A MEMORY OF THAT DAY4 / 5
Some of us were too young to vote in 1994, and some of us were not yet born. So we have asked {Guest name} to tell us what it felt like to cast a ballot for the very first time. Please welcome them warmly.
[APPLAUSE – GUEST TO MICROPHONE] - CLOSING5 / 5
Thank you, {Guest name}. Freedom is something we celebrate together, and something we look after together. Please stay, enjoy the food and the music, and share your own stories with each other. Happy Freedom Day, everyone!
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- South Africa's national anthem combines Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and Die Stem and uses five languages. Print the words or play a recording so every guest can join in.
- Choose a guest who voted in 1994, ideally for the first time, and ask them to speak for about three minutes about one personal detail, such as the queue.
- Keep the script about voting, unity and freedom, not about any party or current politics, especially at workplace, school and embassy events.
- The national flag was first flown in 1994, the year of the election. Dress the venue in its colours and invite guests to wear them too.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
