Heritage Day is a public holiday in South Africa on 24 September. It celebrates the country's many cultures, languages and traditions, and the heritage that all South Africans share. Many people wear traditional dress, and schools, workplaces and communities hold events with music, dance and food. The day is also popularly known as National Braai Day, when families and friends gather around a braai. In KwaZulu-Natal the date is also remembered as King Shaka Day.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Sanibonani, molweni, dumelang, goeiemiddag, and good afternoon, everyone. I'm {Your name}, and it is wonderful to see so many colours, fabrics and traditions in one place for Heritage Day. Thank you to {Organisation} for bringing us all together. - WHY WE CELEBRATE2 / 4
South Africa is home to many cultures, languages and beliefs. Today is our chance to celebrate all of them, and the history we share. Heritage lives in the songs we grew up with, the food on our tables, the clothes we wear and the stories our grandparents told us. - A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE3 / 4
To show us what heritage looks and sounds like, please welcome {Performers' name}.
[CULTURAL PERFORMANCE]
Thank you. And now, to everyone who came in traditional dress today, please stand for a moment so we can all admire you. - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you all. Many families mark this day around a braai, and in a few minutes we will do the same. As you eat, ask someone at your table about a tradition from their family. You may learn something new. Happy Heritage Day!
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Tell guests on the invitation that traditional dress, or something that reflects their heritage, is welcome. It sets the mood before anyone speaks, and nobody feels out of place.
- Swap the greetings in the welcome for languages your audience actually speaks, and check the pronunciation with a first-language speaker beforehand.
- Heritage Day belongs to every community. Give space to different traditions on the programme, and avoid presenting any one culture as the main event.
- In KwaZulu-Natal, 24 September is also remembered as King Shaka Day. If your event is held there, consider acknowledging it respectfully in the welcome.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
