National Day, Quốc khánh, is celebrated in Vietnam on 2 September. It marks the day in 1945 when Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Đình Square in Hanoi, founding the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. It is a public holiday, and streets, homes and offices are decorated with the national flag, a yellow star on a red background. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, concerts and cultural events, and major anniversaries are marked with a parade in Hanoi. Vietnamese embassies abroad host receptions.

[NATIONAL ANTHEM]

[MUSIC AND DANCE PERFORMANCE] - TIME TO EAT4 / 4
Thank you to {Performers}. In Vietnam, celebrations happen around a shared table, and tonight is no different. The food is ready, so please help yourselves, find someone new to talk to and enjoy the evening. Chúc mừng Quốc khánh, happy National Day to you all.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Chúc mừng Quốc khánh means 'Happy National Day'. Practise it with a Vietnamese speaker beforehand; guests will appreciate the effort, even if the tones are not perfect.
- Decorate in red and yellow and display the national flag correctly near the lectern. Many Vietnamese guests may wear the áo dài, so say in the invitation that traditional dress is welcome.
- Vietnamese communities abroad have different histories, and some do not celebrate this day. Keep the programme ceremonial and cultural, and avoid statements on politics or current affairs.
- The public holiday usually includes an extra day next to 2 September. Check the official dates each year when planning school or workplace events, and adjust the timing words in the cards.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
