Brazil's Independence Day, known as Sete de Setembro, is celebrated on 7 September. It marks the day in 1822 when Prince Pedro, who later became Emperor Pedro I, declared Brazil's independence from Portugal near the Ipiranga stream in São Paulo. It is a public holiday. Civic and military parades are held in Brasília and in cities across the country, schools organise their own parades, and the green and yellow flag is displayed everywhere.

- BEM-VINDOS1 / 4
Good evening, and bem-vindos. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} welcome to our celebration of Brazil's Independence Day. There is green and yellow all around the room tonight, and plenty of smiles too, which feels exactly right for Sete de Setembro. - BY THE IPIRANGA STREAM2 / 4
On 7 September 1822, near the Ipiranga stream in São Paulo, Prince Pedro declared Brazil independent from Portugal. Within months he was crowned the country's first emperor. Ever since, Brazilians have marked the date with parades, music and flags, in cities large and small and in communities around the world. - HINO NACIONAL3 / 4
Please rise for the national anthem of Brazil, the Hino Nacional Brasileiro.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you, please be seated. To say a few words about Brazil and its people, we are delighted to welcome {Guest of honour, title}.
[GUEST SPEECH] - SAÚDE4 / 4
Thank you. Now please raise your glass, whether it holds a caipirinha, guaraná or water. To Brazil, to its people wherever they live, and to the warmth they bring to every gathering. Saúde! Please enjoy the music, the food and the rest of the evening.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Invite guests to stand for the Hino Nacional, and print the lyrics: the anthem is long, and many international guests will not know the words.
- Decorate in green and yellow, and give the national flag, with its motto Ordem e Progresso, a place of honour near the lectern rather than using it as a tablecloth.
- Keep the programme non-partisan and focused on culture and shared history, as national colours and symbols can carry political associations for some guests.
- Brazilian music sets the mood quickly. A short samba or choro set after the toast works well and gives guests of all ages a reason to stay on.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
