Republic Proclamation Day, the Proclamação da República, is a public holiday in Brazil on 15 November. It marks the day in 1889 when military officers led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed the republic in Rio de Janeiro, ending the reign of Emperor Pedro II and the monarchy. Deodoro became the republic's first president. Four days later, on 19 November, the new national flag with the motto Ordem e Progresso was adopted, and that date is now Flag Day.

- BOA TARDE1 / 4
Good afternoon, everyone, and boa tarde. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {School or organisation} welcome to our commemoration of the Proclamation of the Republic. Today we look back at a single day that changed how Brazil is governed, and at the flag that came with it. - FROM EMPIRE TO REPUBLIC2 / 4
On 15 November 1889, in Rio de Janeiro, military officers led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed Brazil a republic. Emperor Pedro II left the country with his family, and the monarchy that had ruled since independence came to an end. A new chapter in Brazilian history began. - A FLAG FOR THE REPUBLIC3 / 4
I invite {Flag bearer} to bring our flag forward.
[FLAG IS PRESENTED]
Just four days after the proclamation, Brazil adopted this flag. The blue globe shows the stars over Rio de Janeiro on that November morning, with one star for each state and the Federal District. Across it runs the motto Ordem e Progresso: order and progress. - CLOSING4 / 4
Please rise for the national anthem.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. Please be seated. A republic belongs to all of its citizens, and so does its history. Thank you for joining us today, and enjoy the holiday.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Flag Day falls on 19 November, four days after this holiday. Schools often link the two, so the flag presentation in the third card can lead naturally into Flag Day activities.
- A short civic ceremony with the flag, the anthem and a brief history suits this day well. It is usually a quieter holiday than Independence Day on 7 September.
- Historians describe the events of 1889 in different ways. Keep the script factual, and avoid judging either the empire or the republic, so that guests of all views feel comfortable.
- If pupils take part, ask them to find out which star on the flag stands for their own state; it turns the flag card into a short interactive moment.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
