Revolution Day on 1 November commemorates the start of Algeria's War of Independence in 1954, when the National Liberation Front (FLN) launched coordinated actions across the country and issued its Proclamation of 1 November. The war ended with independence in 1962. The day is a national holiday, marked with official ceremonies, the laying of wreaths at memorials to the martyrs and commemorative events across the country.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, and thank you for being here. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} welcome to this commemoration of Revolution Day. We have gathered to remember the beginning of Algeria's War of Independence, and the men and women who gave their lives for their country's freedom. - THE FIRST OF NOVEMBER2 / 4
On 1 November 1954, the National Liberation Front launched the struggle for independence and issued its proclamation to the Algerian people. The war that followed lasted more than seven years, and it is remembered in families across the country. In 1962, Algeria became independent. - FLOWERS FOR THE MARTYRS3 / 4
I now invite {Guest of honour} to lay flowers in memory of the martyrs. Please stand as the flowers are laid, and remain standing for a moment of quiet reflection.
[FLOWERS LAID – MOMENT OF REFLECTION]
Thank you. Please be seated. - CLOSING4 / 4
The generation of 1954 grows smaller each year. Their stories deserve to be heard and recorded while we still can. If someone in your family remembers those years, ask them to share their memories with you. Thank you for joining us in remembrance today.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- If there is a memorial or plaque nearby, hold the flower-laying there. Otherwise, place the Algerian flag or a framed image on a table at the front to receive the flowers.
- Keep the tone reflective rather than festive: no party music, and a pause instead of applause after the flowers are laid. The anthem, Kassaman, can open or close the ceremony.
- Guests may have very different family histories of the war. Speak about memory and sacrifice, and avoid remarks about present-day politics or relations between Algeria and France.
- Invite an older community member or a historian to share a short account after the flowers are laid, and agree a time limit of a few minutes beforehand.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
