Independence Day on 5 July is one of Algeria's main national holidays. It celebrates independence from France in 1962, which followed the War of Independence and a referendum in which Algerians voted overwhelmingly for independence. Officially called Independence and Youth Day, it is marked with flag displays, official ceremonies, concerts and events for young people, and Algerian communities abroad gather to celebrate.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good evening, everyone, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} I'm delighted to celebrate Algeria's Independence Day with you. It is wonderful to see so many families here tonight, from grandparents to the youngest guests in the room. - INDEPENDENCE AND YOUTH2 / 4
In 1962, after years of struggle, Algeria won its independence, and 5 July became a day of national celebration. Its official name is Independence and Youth Day, so tonight we celebrate both: the freedom earned by earlier generations, and the young people who will carry the country forward. - KASSAMAN AND OUR AWARD3 / 4
Please stand for the national anthem, Kassaman.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. You may sit down. This year, our youth award goes to {Award winner}, in recognition of {Achievement}. Please come forward to receive it.
[AWARD PRESENTATION – APPLAUSE] - CLOSING4 / 4
Congratulations once again to our award winner. To every young person here: the story of this day is yours to learn, to tell and to build on. Thank you all for coming. Please enjoy the music and the food, and happy Independence Day to every one of you.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Kassaman is a long anthem. Check the length of the recording you will use, and let guests know beforehand that they will stand for it.
- Choose the youth award winner fairly and well in advance, for example a student, volunteer or young athlete from your community, so that their family can attend.
- Many families carry personal memories of the war that led to independence. Keep the script celebratory but respectful, and avoid remarks about present-day relations between Algeria and France.
- Decorate in green, white and red, the colours of the Algerian flag, and display the flag itself at the front of the room, above any other decorations.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
