Revolution Day on 23 July is Egypt's National Day. It commemorates the revolution of 23 July 1952, when the Free Officers movement took power. King Farouk abdicated a few days later, and in 1953 Egypt was declared a republic, ending the monarchy. The day is a public holiday in Egypt, marked with official addresses and ceremonies, and Egyptian embassies around the world hold National Day receptions.

- WELCOME AND ANTHEM1 / 4
Good evening, and welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and tonight we mark Revolution Day, the National Day of Egypt. Let us begin by standing for the national anthem, Bilady, Bilady, Bilady.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. Please be seated. - THE DAY ITSELF2 / 4
On 23 July 1952, the Free Officers movement took power in Egypt. Within days, King Farouk had abdicated, and in 1953 Egypt became a republic. It opened a new chapter in a very long history, and each generation since has looked back on it with its own questions. - INTRODUCING OUR SPEAKER3 / 4
To help us reflect on those years and what followed, I'm delighted to welcome {Speaker's name, title}. Our speaker will talk about {Topic of the talk}, and there will be time for a few questions afterwards. Please join me in welcoming our speaker.
[APPLAUSE – SPEAKER TO LECTERN] - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you for a thoughtful talk, and thank you all for your questions. History is richer when we look at it together and listen to different memories of it. Thank you for marking this day with us. Please stay for refreshments and conversation.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Egypt's national anthem is Bilady, Bilady, Bilady. Use an official recording, ask guests to stand, and display the red, white and black Egyptian flag with its golden eagle at the front.
- Views on the 1952 revolution and its legacy differ among Egyptians and among historians. Keep the script reflective and factual, and avoid comparisons with present-day politics or comments on individual leaders.
- July is a summer holiday month, so you may prefer to meet on the nearest evening or weekend. If you are not meeting on 23 July itself, adjust the wording of the first card.
- Ask your speaker for a talk of about ten to fifteen minutes and agree the topic in advance. A historian, author or long-standing member of the community works well.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
