Armed Forces Day on 6 October commemorates the crossing of the Suez Canal by Egyptian forces at the start of the October War of 1973. Also known as October Victory Day, it is a public holiday in Egypt. The day honours members of the armed forces, past and present, and remembers those who lost their lives. It is marked with official ceremonies and commemorative events, and 6th of October City, near Cairo, takes its name from the date.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} I'm glad you could join us today. On Armed Forces Day, Egypt honours those who serve in uniform, thanks the families who stand behind them, and remembers those who did not come home. - THE CROSSING2 / 4
On 6 October 1973, Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal at the start of the October War. For many families, that day is part of their own story, passed down by parents and grandparents who lived through it. We mark it today with gratitude and quiet reflection. - HONOURING OUR VETERANS3 / 4
Among us today are veterans and their families. If they are able, I would ask them to stand, so that we may thank them.
[VETERANS STAND – GUESTS RISE IN TRIBUTE]
Thank you. Please, all remain standing as we remember, in a minute of silence, those who lost their lives.
[ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE] - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you. Please be seated. What one generation gave, the next must remember and pass on. Thank you to our veterans and their families, and to every one of you for being here. Refreshments are now served in {Room or area}, where you are welcome to stay and talk.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- In Israel the same conflict is known as the Yom Kippur War, and it is remembered differently across the region. Keep the script focused on service, sacrifice and remembrance, without remarks about other countries or current conflicts.
- Ask veterans beforehand whether they are comfortable being invited to stand, and reserve seats near the front with easy access for older guests and anyone with limited mobility.
- If you gather at a war memorial, a simple wreath laid by a veteran, or by a young member of a veteran's family, suits the reflective tone of the day.
- Some families lost relatives in the war. Keep the language respectful rather than triumphant, and let the silence end quietly before you continue with the programme.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
