World Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5 October to recognise teachers' contributions and their central role in education. UNESCO established it in 1994 to mark the anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set standards for teachers' rights, responsibilities, training and working conditions. Schools, universities and communities mark the day with student-led assemblies, thank-you messages and awards. Many countries also celebrate a national Teachers' Day on a different date.

- WELCOME1 / 5
Good morning, students, staff, parents and guests. I'm {Your name}, and it's my privilege to welcome you to this special assembly for World Teachers' Day. Today the usual roles are reversed: our teachers get to sit back and listen, and the rest of us get to say thank you. - WHY WE CELEBRATE TODAY2 / 5
This day has been celebrated since 1994. It recalls an international recommendation from 1966 that set out what teachers need to do their work well: proper training, fair conditions and respect for their profession. Behind every doctor, engineer, artist and parent here, there was a teacher who believed in them. - IN OUR STUDENTS' WORDS3 / 5
We asked our students one question: which teacher changed the way you see the world, and how? Here to share the answers, on behalf of {Class or year group}, is {Student's name}.
[STUDENT SPEAKER TO LECTERN] - A ROOM FULL OF THANKS4 / 5
Thank you, {Student's name}. Now, would every teacher, teaching assistant and member of staff please stand? Everyone else, this moment is yours: show them what their patience, care and long hours have meant to you.
[STAFF STAND – APPLAUSE] - CLOSING5 / 5
Teaching happens in busy city schools, small village classrooms, lecture halls and online. Wherever you teach, thank you for the energy you bring and the countless hours no one sees. Happy World Teachers' Day, and please enjoy the refreshments our students have prepared.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Many countries celebrate a national Teachers' Day on a different date, so check which day your school or community observes, and mention both if both are marked locally.
- Read the student tribute beforehand and keep it to about two minutes. If it names particular teachers, check they are happy to be mentioned in front of the whole school.
- Include everyone who supports learning, such as teaching assistants, librarians, coaches and support staff. In universities or workplaces, adapt the welcome to lecturers, trainers and mentors.
- Handmade cards, a thank-you wall or a breakfast prepared by students often mean more than gifts, and they avoid putting pressure on families to buy presents.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
