German Unity Day, the Tag der Deutschen Einheit, is Germany's national holiday on 3 October. It marks the reunification of 1990, when the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany, ending more than four decades of division. It is a public holiday throughout the country. The main official celebration is hosted each year by the federal state that holds the presidency of the Bundesrat, and German embassies abroad hold receptions.

- WELCOME1 / 5
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to {Venue}. My name is {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} thank you for joining us to celebrate German Unity Day, the Tag der Deutschen Einheit. - ONE COUNTRY AGAIN2 / 5
On 3 October 1990, less than a year after the Berlin Wall fell, the two German states became one country again. After more than four decades apart, families, cities and a nation were reunited. Tonight we celebrate that peaceful achievement, and the people in East and West who made it possible. - UNITY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM3 / 5
The German national anthem begins with the words Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit: unity and justice and freedom. Please rise as we hear it now.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM OF GERMANY]
Thank you. Please be seated. - A WORD FROM OUR GUEST4 / 5
To reflect on what unity means today, it is my pleasure to invite {Guest of honour, title} to say a few words. Please join me in welcoming our guest.
[GUEST OF HONOUR TO THE LECTERN] - CLOSING5 / 5
Thank you. Please stay and enjoy the evening, the food and the conversation. Whether your roots are in the East, the West or far beyond Germany, you are part of tonight's celebration. Thank you all for coming.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Only the third stanza of the Lied der Deutschen is the national anthem. Use an official recording, and print those words for guests who would like to sing.
- Experiences of reunification differ between East and West, and between generations. Keep the script celebratory and inclusive, and avoid comparisons that cast either side unfavourably.
- Receptions abroad usually pair a short speech and the anthem with food and drink. Dishes from different German regions make a friendly nod to unity.
- Display the federal flag in black, red and gold, with black at the top. At events abroad, place the host country's flag alongside it.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
