Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday in India on 2 October, the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born in Porbandar in 1869. Known as Mahatma, he became a leading figure in India's struggle for independence, which he pursued through nonviolent resistance. The day is observed with prayer meetings, floral tributes at Raj Ghat in Delhi and at his portraits in schools and offices, and community service such as cleanliness drives. The United Nations marks 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence.

- GOOD MORNING1 / 5
Good morning, and thank you for joining us. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} I welcome you to this gathering on Gandhi Jayanti. We meet simply today, without ceremony or fanfare, to remember a life built on truth and nonviolence. - A LIFE OF NONVIOLENCE2 / 5
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar. He trained as a lawyer, and over many years he became a leading voice in India's struggle for independence. His method was nonviolent resistance: standing firm against injustice, but without causing harm to anyone. - A FLORAL TRIBUTE3 / 5
I now invite {Chief guest, title} to offer flowers at his portrait. After that, everyone is welcome to come forward and place a flower in silence. There is no need to hurry, and no need to speak.
[FLORAL TRIBUTES – SOFT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC] - A THOUGHT TO CARRY4 / 5
Nonviolence is not only for history books. It can guide how we settle a disagreement at work, how we speak to a neighbour, and how we treat someone we do not yet understand. As you leave today, think of one such moment in your own week, and how you might meet it peacefully. - CLOSING5 / 5
Thank you for your presence and your quiet attention this morning. You are welcome to stay and sit for a few more minutes before you go. A simple act of kindness today would be a fitting way to remember him. Please leave the hall quietly when you are ready.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- 2 October is also the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's second Prime Minister. Many Indian events honour both, so consider adding a sentence and a second portrait.
- Gandhi Jayanti is observed as a dry day across India, so do not plan alcohol at any event held there, and keep refreshments simple.
- Bhajans associated with Gandhi, such as Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram and Vaishnav Jan To, are often sung at prayer meetings. For a mixed audience, an instrumental version keeps the tribute inclusive.
- Avoid applause and loud music throughout. For events abroad, the International Day of Non-Violence is a natural way to introduce the day to guests who do not know it.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode.
