Republic Day is celebrated in India on 26 January. It marks the day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into force and the country became a republic. The date honours 26 January 1930, when the Indian National Congress proclaimed the goal of Purna Swaraj, or complete independence. The main celebration is a parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi, where the President unfurls the national flag. Schools, offices and housing societies hold their own flag ceremonies and cultural programmes.

- GOOD MORNING1 / 5
Good morning, and a very warm welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {School or organisation} I am delighted to welcome our chief guest, {Chief guest, title}, along with our teachers, families and friends. Today we celebrate the day India became a republic. - A REPUBLIC IS BORN2 / 5
On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force, and India became a sovereign democratic republic. The Constitution guarantees every citizen fundamental rights and sets out how the nation governs itself. The date was chosen to honour 26 January 1930, when the call for Purna Swaraj, complete independence, was proclaimed. - FLAG AND ANTHEM3 / 5
On Republic Day the flag is not raised from the foot of the pole. It is tied at the top and unfurled there. May I request {Chief guest, title} to unfurl the national flag. Everyone, please rise and remain standing for the national anthem.
[FLAG UNFURLING – NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. Please be seated. - THE PREAMBLE4 / 5
The Constitution opens with a short Preamble that begins with the words 'We, the people of India'. Those words belong to all of us, so let us hear the Preamble read aloud. Please welcome {Reader's name}.
[READING OF THE PREAMBLE] - CLOSING5 / 5
Thank you, {Reader's name}. Those few lines promise justice, liberty, equality and fraternity to every citizen, and it is up to each of us to live by them. Our cultural programme begins in a moment. Thank you all for being here, and a very happy Republic Day. Jai Hind.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- On Republic Day the flag is folded and tied at the top of the pole and unfurled there, whereas on Independence Day it is hoisted from the bottom. Check the knot and the cord before guests arrive.
- Under the Flag Code of India the saffron band must be at the top, and the flag should never touch the ground. Assign one person to prepare the flag and to take it down respectfully afterwards.
- Everyone stands to attention for Jana Gana Mana, which lasts about 52 seconds in full. Use an official recording or a rehearsed group of singers, and keep the room silent until it ends.
- Print the Preamble in large type for the reader, in Hindi, English or both. In schools it works well to let several students read it together, one line each.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
