Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday in January, close to Dr. King's birthday on January 15. It honors the Baptist minister and civil rights leader who championed nonviolent action for racial equality and justice, and who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The holiday was first observed nationally in 1986. Since 1994 it has also been a national day of service, and many people volunteer, attend commemorative services or join community marches.

- WELCOME1 / 5
Good morning, everyone. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organization}, thank you for being here. We have gathered to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and to consider, quietly and honestly, what his example means for each of us today. - WHY WE MARK THIS DAY2 / 5
Dr. King was a Baptist minister who became a leader of the civil rights movement, committed to nonviolent action. He marched, preached, organized and went to jail for the cause of equal rights. He was born in 1929 and was killed in 1968, at just 39 years old. His work helped change the nation's laws. - A MOMENT OF REFLECTION3 / 5
I now invite you to join in a minute of quiet reflection. Think of someone whose courage made your own life fairer. Then think of one thing you can do this year to make life fairer for someone else.
[ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE]
Thank you. - INTRODUCING OUR SPEAKER4 / 5
To help us reflect further, it is my privilege to introduce {Guest speaker, title}, who will share some thoughts on what Dr. King's legacy asks of our community now. Please give our speaker your full attention.
[SPEAKER TO LECTERN] - CLOSING5 / 5
Since 1994, this holiday has also been a national day of service. Before you leave, please stop at the table by the door and sign up for {Service project}. Let us honor Dr. King not only with our words today, but with our hands and our time. Thank you for being with us.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Many communities treat the holiday as a day of service. Pair your program with a real local volunteer project and give clear sign-up details in the closing card so people know where to go next.
- If someone reads a passage from Dr. King's speeches or writings, choose it in advance and introduce its title and year. Many of his works remain under copyright, so check permissions before recording or publishing the event.
- Keep the focus on Dr. King's commitment to nonviolence, justice and equality. Avoid claiming what he would say about today's political debates, and invite speakers with a real connection to civil rights work in your area.
- The holiday falls on the third Monday in January, so the date changes each year. If your school or office is closed that day, hold the program on the last working day before and adjust the word today in the cards.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
