Independence Day is celebrated in India on 15 August. It marks the end of British rule in 1947, when India became an independent nation at midnight. Each year the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and addresses the nation. Across the country, schools, offices and housing societies hold flag-hoisting ceremonies with the national anthem and patriotic songs, and many people fly the tricolour at home. Kite flying is a popular tradition in Delhi.

- WELCOME, EVERYONE1 / 5
Good morning, and happy Independence Day. My name is {Your name}. It's wonderful to see students, parents, colleagues and neighbours gathered here at {Venue} under one flag. A special welcome to {Chief guest, title}, who will hoist the tricolour for us this morning. - THE ROAD TO FREEDOM2 / 5
At midnight on 15 August 1947, India became an independent nation. That freedom was the result of a long struggle, carried by well-known leaders and by countless villagers, students and workers whose names we will never know. This morning we honour every one of them. - HOISTING THE FLAG3 / 5
I now invite {Chief guest, title} to hoist the national flag. Please stand, and stay on your feet for Jana Gana Mana.
[FLAG HOISTING – NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. You may be seated. Look up for a moment at the saffron, white and green, and the wheel at the centre. They belong to every Indian, wherever they live. - SONGS OF FREEDOM4 / 5
Songs were part of the freedom movement, and they still bring people together today. Please welcome {Performers}, who have prepared a selection of patriotic songs for us.
[PATRIOTIC SONGS]
Thank you, {Performers}, for that beautiful performance. - CLOSING5 / 5
Our freedom was hard won, and each generation looks after it in its own way: by learning, by serving and by treating one another with respect. Sweets will be shared at the gate as you leave. Happy Independence Day, and Jai Hind.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- On Independence Day the flag is hoisted from the bottom of the pole, unlike Republic Day, when it is unfurled at the top. Rehearse the hoist with the cord so the flag rises and opens smoothly.
- Independence in 1947 also brought Partition, a time of great loss for many families. Keep the script celebratory and inclusive, and avoid remarks about any community or neighbouring country.
- The Flag Code of India asks that paper flags used by the public are not left on the ground afterwards. If children are given small flags, plan to collect them respectfully at the end.
- 15 August falls during the monsoon in much of India, so have a covered space ready in case of rain, and a dry place to keep the flag before the ceremony.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
