Independence Day is Ukraine's main national holiday, celebrated on 24 August. On that date in 1991, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence, which was confirmed by a nationwide referendum on 1 December 1991. The day before, 23 August, is the Day of the State Flag. Blue and yellow flags are displayed, many people wear the embroidered shirt known as the vyshyvanka, and communities in Ukraine and abroad hold concerts and gatherings.

- Z DNEM NEZALEZHNOSTI1 / 4
Good afternoon, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} it's an honour to mark Ukraine's Independence Day with you. I see embroidered shirts, blue and yellow ribbons and many familiar faces. You are all very welcome, whether you were born in Ukraine or have come to share the day. - THE DECLARATION2 / 4
On 24 August 1991, the parliament of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada, adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence. A few months later, on 1 December, citizens confirmed that decision in a nationwide referendum. Today we celebrate the independent state that grew from those two moments, and the people who carry its story. - OUR FLAG, OUR ANTHEM3 / 4
I now invite {Flag bearer} to bring forward the flag of Ukraine, often described as a blue sky above yellow fields of wheat. Please stand for the national anthem.
[FLAG PRESENTED – NATIONAL ANTHEM OF UKRAINE]
Thank you. Please be seated. - SONGS OF UKRAINE4 / 4
To celebrate, please welcome {Performer or choir}, who will perform songs from across Ukraine.
[MUSICAL PERFORMANCE]
Thank you for that beautiful music, and thank you all for being here. Please stay, enjoy the food and the company, and once more: z Dnem Nezalezhnosti, happy Independence Day.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Z Dnem Nezalezhnosti means 'happy Independence Day' in Ukrainian. Use it to open and close the event, and ask a Ukrainian speaker to check your pronunciation beforehand.
- Many guests will wear a vyshyvanka, the embroidered shirt. Say in the invitation that guests are welcome to wear one, and that smart everyday clothes are equally fine.
- Display the flag with blue above yellow. Print the first verse and chorus of the national anthem in Ukrainian, with a transliteration for guests who do not read Cyrillic.
- Guests may bring strong personal feelings to this day. Keep the programme ceremonial and inclusive, avoid political statements and slogans, and agree any words of remembrance with community representatives in advance.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
