Independence Day is a public holiday in Pakistan on 14 August. It marks the country's establishment as an independent state in 1947, at the end of British rule in the subcontinent, with Muhammad Ali Jinnah as its first Governor-General. Celebrations begin at midnight with fireworks, and the day brings flag-hoisting ceremonies, gun salutes and the changing of the guard at the mausoleums of Jinnah and Allama Iqbal. Homes, streets and vehicles are decorated with green and white flags and bunting.

- JASHN-E-AZADI MUBARAK1 / 5
Good morning, and Jashn-e-Azadi Mubarak to every one of you. I'm {Your name}, your host today at {Venue}. Look around: green and white everywhere, from the youngest children to our most senior guests. It's a joy to celebrate this day together. - A NEW COUNTRY2 / 5
On 14 August 1947, Pakistan took its place in the world as an independent state, with Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as its first Governor-General. It was a moment of great hope for millions. It also brought upheaval and loss for many families, and we remember them too as we celebrate. - RAISING THE FLAG3 / 5
I now invite {Chief guest, title} to raise the flag of Pakistan. Please stand, and stay standing for the national anthem.
[FLAG RAISING – NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. The green of our flag and its white stripe remind us that this country is home to people of every faith. - NATIONAL SONGS4 / 5
And now, some of our youngest voices. The children of {School or group} have prepared a selection of much-loved national songs. Please give them your warmest welcome, and feel free to sing along if you know the words.
[PERFORMANCE OF NATIONAL SONGS] - CLOSING5 / 5
What a performance. Thank you, {School or group}. The generation of 1947 gave us this country; looking after it is the work of ours. Enjoy the food and the festivities, take plenty of photos, and Pakistan Zindabad.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- The flag's green field represents the Muslim majority and the white stripe the country's religious minorities. Mentioning this, as the third card does, is a simple way to make every guest feel included.
- Independence in 1947 came with Partition, which caused immense suffering on both sides of the new border. Keep the celebration warm and inclusive, and avoid remarks about any community or neighbouring country.
- Green and white clothing suits both hosts and performers. If children are given small paper flags, collect them at the end rather than leaving them on the ground.
- Plan for the August heat and the monsoon rains: an indoor or shaded space, plenty of water and a short flag ceremony keep everyone comfortable.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
