National Heroes Day, Araw ng mga Bayani, is a regular holiday in the Philippines on the last Monday of August. It honours the Filipino heroes, both famous and unnamed, who fought for the country's freedom and helped build the nation. Late August also recalls the start of the revolution against Spanish rule in 1896. The day is marked with wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments and shrines, flag ceremonies, and programmes in schools and public offices.

- OPENING1 / 4
Good morning. I'm {Your name}, and I welcome you on behalf of {Organisation} to this observance of Araw ng mga Bayani. We gather to honour the heroes of the Philippines: those whose names fill our history books, and the many more whose names were never written down. - WHO WE HONOUR2 / 4
We remember Andrés Bonifacio, José Rizal, Melchora Aquino and Apolinario Mabini. We also remember the farmers, soldiers, teachers and parents who stood beside them, and every Filipino since who has served the nation at great personal cost. Each of them belongs to this day. - NAMES FROM OUR COMMUNITY3 / 4
Every town has its own heroes. A student from {School or group} will now read the names of men and women from our own community whom we honour today. After the last name, please remain standing in silence for a moment.
[READING OF NAMES – MOMENT OF SILENCE] - THE WREATH4 / 4
I now invite {Guest of honour, title} to lay a wreath at the monument on behalf of us all.
[WREATH LAYING]
Thank you. Heroism is not only for wartime. It lives in quiet acts of service, in honesty and in care for others. As we leave, may each of us look for a way to serve. Please depart quietly.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- The holiday falls on the last Monday of August, so its date changes every year. Check the official proclamation of holidays before printing invitations.
- Ask local historians, the municipal hall or veterans' groups to help compile your list of community heroes, and check the spelling of every name with families where possible.
- Overseas Filipino workers, health workers and other public servants are often described as modern-day heroes. A line acknowledging them can make the closing card feel close to home.
- Keep the ceremony dignified: begin with the flag ceremony, avoid applause during the reading of names and the wreath laying, and choose simple dark or Filipino formal attire.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
