Independence Day, Araw ng Kalayaan, is a regular holiday in the Philippines on 12 June. It marks the declaration of independence from Spain proclaimed by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite, on 12 June 1898, when the national flag was formally unfurled and the national march was played for the first time. The holiday has been held on 12 June since 1962. Flag-raising ceremonies, parades and civic programmes take place across the country and in Filipino communities abroad.

- MAGANDANG UMAGA1 / 5
Magandang umaga po, and good morning, everyone. I'm {Your name}, and it's an honour to welcome you to {Venue} on behalf of {Organisation}. Today Filipinos at home and around the world celebrate Independence Day, and we are glad to celebrate it with all of you. - KAWIT, CAVITE2 / 5
On 12 June 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence from Spain at his home in Kawit, Cavite. That day the national flag was formally unfurled and the national march was played for the first time. Today those two symbols still bring Filipinos together, wherever they live. - FLAG AND NATIONAL ANTHEM3 / 5
Please stand for the raising of the flag and the singing of Lupang Hinirang. Filipinos place the right hand over the heart; for our guests from other countries, standing quietly is a perfect sign of respect.
[FLAG RAISING – LUPANG HINIRANG]
Salamat po. Please be seated. - A FOLK DANCE4 / 5
Our celebration continues with {Dance group}, performing tinikling, a much-loved folk dance in which dancers step nimbly between bamboo poles as they are clapped together. Keep your eyes on their feet.
[FOLK DANCE PERFORMANCE] - MABUHAY5 / 5
Salamat, {Dance group}. Independence was declared more than a hundred years ago, and every generation since has added a chapter to the story. Thank you for being part of it today. Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan, and mabuhay ang Pilipinas.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Lupang Hinirang must be sung in Filipino, with everyone standing and the right palm over the left chest. Use an official recording at the proper tempo rather than a pop arrangement.
- Check the flag before the ceremony: in peacetime it is displayed with the blue field on top. Showing the red field on top signals a state of war.
- For formal events, Filipino attire such as the barong Tagalog or a Filipiniana dress is a fitting choice for hosts and guests.
- Adapt the performance card to your community: tinikling is popular, but a choir, a rondalla or a regional dance from guests' home provinces works equally well.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
