Republic Day, the Festa della Repubblica, is a public holiday in Italy on 2 June. It marks the institutional referendum of 2 and 3 June 1946, in which Italians chose a republic rather than the monarchy. It was the first national vote in which Italian women took part. In Rome, the day is marked with a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali and a flypast by the Frecce Tricolori, and Italian embassies abroad hold receptions.

- BENVENUTI1 / 4
Benvenuti, and good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I'm {Your name}, and it is a great pleasure to welcome you to {Venue} to celebrate the Festa della Repubblica. Tonight we celebrate Italy, its people, and a choice that shaped the country we know today. - A NATION DECIDES2 / 4
On 2 and 3 June 1946, Italians went to the polls and chose a republic over the monarchy. For the first time in a national vote, women cast their ballots alongside men. The same voters elected the assembly that wrote the Constitution, which came into force in 1948. - IL CANTO DEGLI ITALIANI3 / 4
Please rise for the national anthem of Italy.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Grazie. Please be seated. In Rome, the Frecce Tricolori fly over the parade, trailing green, white and red smoke across the sky. We cannot quite match that here, but we can certainly raise a glass. - UN BRINDISI4 / 4
Please raise your glasses. To Italy, to the Republic, and to everyone here who carries a little of Italy with them, wherever they live. Viva la Repubblica, viva l'Italia, and cin cin!
[TOAST]
Now please enjoy the evening, the food and the company. Buona serata a tutti.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Many Italians call the anthem Fratelli d'Italia, from its opening words, though its title is Il Canto degli Italiani. Print the first verse and chorus for guests who would like to sing.
- Decorate in green, white and red, and hang the Italian flag with the green band nearest the pole.
- The 1946 referendum was the first national vote for Italian women. Acknowledging this in the welcome or the toast is a thoughtful touch for many audiences.
- If your audience includes Italians from different regions or several generations of emigrants, a brief welcome that acknowledges where they come from is a warm addition.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
