Liberation Day, the Festa della Liberazione, is a public holiday in Italy on 25 April. It commemorates the liberation of Italy from Nazi occupation and the Fascist regime in 1945, and honours the Resistance, the partisans and all who contributed. The date recalls the general insurrection proclaimed in northern Italy on 25 April 1945. The President of the Republic lays a wreath at the Altare della Patria in Rome, and towns hold ceremonies, marches and concerts.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, everyone. My name is {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} I welcome you to this gathering for the Festa della Liberazione. Today we remember how Italy regained its freedom, and the many people who paid for it. - SPRING 19452 / 4
In the spring of 1945, after years of war, occupation and dictatorship, Italy was freed. Partisans of the Resistance, Allied soldiers and countless ordinary citizens all played their part. On 25 April, a general uprising was called in the occupied north, and city after city was liberated in the days that followed. - A VOICE FROM THE RESISTANCE3 / 4
Many who resisted left letters and testimonies behind. {Reader's name} will now read {Text chosen}.
[READING]
Thank you. These words remind us that freedom was a choice made by real people, often at great cost. - THE ANTHEM4 / 4
The Republic and the Constitution that followed were built on that freedom. Please rise for Il Canto degli Italiani.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. May this day remind us that liberty must be looked after by every generation. Grazie, and thank you for coming.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Choose a short reading, such as one of the published last letters written by members of the Resistance, and give it to the reader on its own card in large type.
- Liberation Day is viewed differently across Italy's political spectrum. Keep the script factual and commemorative, honour all who contributed, and avoid party slogans or songs that may divide your audience.
- If a partisans' or veterans' association attends, give its representative a place in the programme and agree the order of speakers in advance.
- If there is a memorial to the Resistance nearby, consider adding a short wreath-laying before the reading, and keep the anthem as the final moment.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
