Denmark's Constitution Day, Grundlovsdag, is marked on 5 June. It celebrates the Constitution signed on that date in 1849, which ended absolute monarchy and introduced constitutional government; the current Constitution was also signed on 5 June, in 1953. Flags fly across the country, and many towns hold open-air meetings with speeches. The day is also Father's Day in Denmark. It is not an official public holiday, but many workplaces close early.

- VELKOMMEN1 / 4
Good afternoon, and velkommen. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} welcome to our celebration of Grundlovsdag. A special greeting to the fathers here: in Denmark, today is Father's Day too, so you have two reasons to celebrate. - FROM KING TO CONSTITUTION2 / 4
On 5 June 1849, the king signed Denmark's first democratic Constitution, and absolute monarchy came to an end. From then on, power was shared with an elected parliament. The Constitution has been revised since, and today's version was signed on the same date in 1953. - THE CONSTITUTION DAY SPEECH3 / 4
Across Denmark this afternoon, speeches are being given in parks and town squares. Ours comes from {Speaker, title}, and afterwards we will sing {Song title} together, with the words on your tables.
[SPEECH, THEN COMMUNAL SINGING] - TAK FOR I DAG4 / 4
Thank you to {Speaker, title}, and thank you all for singing with us. Democracy is something we practise together, in voices and in votes. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon, call your father if you can, and have a good Constitution Day.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Constitution Day meetings have a long tradition of political speeches. At a mixed or workplace event, keep the programme non-partisan and focused on democracy and shared values.
- Communal singing is a strong Danish tradition. Choose a well-known song, print the lyrics for every table and give international guests a short translation.
- Constitution Day is an official flag day, so fly the Dannebrog if you have a flagpole. Mention Father's Day lightly, since not every guest will be celebrating it.
- Because many workplaces close around midday, plan the timing of your event around this, and check whether your own organisation gives the afternoon off.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
