National Day is a public holiday in Singapore on 9 August. It celebrates independence in 1965, when Singapore separated from Malaysia and became a sovereign republic. The highlight is the National Day Parade, with marching contingents, aerial displays and fireworks, watched in person and on screens across the island. People wear red and white, flags appear on homes and buildings, and schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods hold their own celebrations, often with the National Pledge and National Day songs.

- HELLO, EVERYONE1 / 5
Good evening, and happy National Day. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} welcome to {Venue}. I see a sea of red and white tonight, which is exactly how it should be. Thank you all for coming to celebrate with us. - FROM ISLAND TO NATION2 / 5
On 9 August 1965, Singapore became an independent republic. It was a small island with few natural resources, and the road ahead was uncertain. What followed was built by people of many races, languages and religions working together. That shared effort is what we celebrate tonight. - PLEDGE AND ANTHEM3 / 5
Please stand. Those who wish to may place their right fist over the heart as we recite the National Pledge together, followed by the national anthem, Majulah Singapura.
[NATIONAL PLEDGE – MAJULAH SINGAPURA]
Thank you. Please be seated. - SONGS WE ALL KNOW4 / 5
National Day is not quite complete without the songs many of us grew up with. {Choir or band} will lead us in a medley, and the words are on the screen, so please sing along.
[NATIONAL DAY SONGS – SING-ALONG] - CLOSING5 / 5
Thank you, {Choir or band}. Whether you were born here, chose to make Singapore home, or are visiting tonight, thank you for celebrating with us. Enjoy the food, keep an eye out for the fireworks, and happy National Day, Singapore.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Majulah Singapura is sung in Malay. Display the lyrics on screen so that every guest, including younger children and visitors, can follow along.
- The National Pledge is recited with the right fist over the heart. Non-citizen guests may simply stand, which is why the script invites rather than instructs.
- Count the anniversary from 1965 when adapting the welcome. Banners and slides often feature the year's number, as with SG60 in 2025.
- Many people watch the National Day Parade live in the evening. Time your event to end before it starts, or show the broadcast on a big screen.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
