Total Defence Day is observed in Singapore on 15 February, the anniversary of the fall of Singapore in 1942, when British forces surrendered and the Japanese Occupation began. It is not a public holiday. The day reminds Singaporeans that the nation's security depends on everyone, through the six pillars of Total Defence: military, civil, economic, social, psychological and digital. Schools hold commemorative activities, a memorial service takes place at the Civilian War Memorial, and the Public Warning System sounds the Important Message signal.

- OPENING1 / 5
Good morning, everyone. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {School or organisation} thank you for joining this Total Defence Day commemoration. Today we look back on a dark chapter in Singapore's history, and we ask what it means for each of us now. - THE FALL OF SINGAPORE2 / 5
On 15 February 1942, British forces in Singapore surrendered, and the Japanese Occupation began. It lasted three and a half years. Families endured hunger and fear, and many people lost their lives. Total Defence grew from a lesson of that time: Singapore must be able to defend itself, with everyone playing a part. - A MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE3 / 5
Let us pause to remember all who suffered and died during the Occupation, soldiers and civilians alike, whatever their background. Please stand.
[ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE]
Thank you. Please be seated. - EVERYONE HAS A PART4 / 5
Total Defence has six pillars: military, civil, economic, social, psychological and digital. Defence is not only for soldiers. It is the nurse who keeps working in a crisis, the neighbour who checks on an elderly resident, and the colleague who spots a scam email before anyone clicks on it. - CLOSING5 / 5
As you return to your day, think about which pillar you can strengthen, at school, at work or at home. Remembering the past is one way we keep the future secure. Thank you for your attention this morning.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Total Defence Day is a working day, so commemorations are usually held during school assemblies or at the start of the working day. Keep the programme brief and focused.
- The Public Warning System sounds the Important Message signal on Total Defence Day. Check the official announcement for the time, and consider holding your moment of silence just after it.
- Avoid language that blames any present-day country or people. Keep the focus on remembrance, resilience and the shared responsibility at the heart of Total Defence.
- Adapt the examples in the fourth card to your audience: students, healthcare workers, shop owners and office staff each contribute to different pillars.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
