Language Martyrs' Day, or Shaheed Dibosh, is observed in Bangladesh on 21 February, a date known simply as Ekushey February. It remembers those killed in Dhaka on 21 February 1952 during the Bengali Language Movement, which demanded recognition of Bangla as a state language. People walk barefoot to lay flowers at the Central Shaheed Minar and at memorials across the country, singing a song of remembrance. In 1999 UNESCO proclaimed 21 February International Mother Language Day.

  1. OPENING

  2. WHY WE REMEMBER
On 21 February 1952, students and others in Dhaka took to the streets to demand recognition for Bangla as a state language. Several of them were killed. Their sacrifice gave new strength to the Language Movement, and within a few years Bangla was recognised as a state language. We remember them every year on this date.

  3. SILENCE AND FLOWERS
Please rise. In memory of the language martyrs, let us stand together in silence.
    [ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE]
Thank you. Please remain standing as we lay flowers at our Shaheed Minar and sing the song of Ekushey together.
[FLORAL TRIBUTE – AMAR BHAIER ROKTE RANGANO]

  4. EVERY MOTHER TONGUE
Because of that day, 21 February is now observed around the world as International Mother Language Day. Whatever language you first spoke at home, today honours it too. Thank you for being here. Please leave quietly, and keep the memory of Ekushey with you.
