Victory Day, Bijoy Dibosh, is a public holiday in Bangladesh on 16 December. It commemorates the end of the Liberation War in 1971, when Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka and Bangladesh's independence was secured after nine months of war. The day begins with a gun salute and tributes at the National Memorial in Savar, followed by a parade, flag ceremonies and cultural programmes. Buildings are decorated in red and green, and families remember those who fought and died.

- GOOD EVENING1 / 4
Good evening, and thank you for being here. My name is {Your name}. Tonight {Organisation} marks Victory Day, a day of joy that also carries deep memories for many families. We will celebrate, and we will remember, because both belong to this day. - THE END OF THE WAR2 / 4
On 16 December 1971, after nine months of war, Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka, and Bangladesh's independence was secured. The cost was immense. Freedom fighters, villagers, students and families across the country paid a heavy price. Victory Day honours both their courage and their loss. - A VOICE FROM HISTORY3 / 4
Some of the most valuable lessons about 1971 come from those who lived through it or have studied it closely. It is my honour to invite {Guest speaker, title} to share memories and reflections from that time.
[SPEAKER TO LECTERN] - LOOKING FORWARD4 / 4
Thank you, {Guest speaker, title}. Victory was won in 1971; the work of building a fair and peaceful country continues every day, in classrooms, offices and homes. Please rise now for our national anthem.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM – AMAR SHONAR BANGLA]
Thank you all, and a meaningful Victory Day to every one of you.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Keep the script about the people of 1971 and the meaning of victory. Party politics and present-day debates about the war's history do not belong in a commemorative speech.
- Independence Day on 26 March marks the start of the war, and Victory Day marks its end. Check that banners, slides and invitations carry the right name and date.
- If a freedom fighter speaks, brief them on the time available, and have a chair and a table microphone ready in case they prefer to sit.
- If guests include people of Pakistani heritage, keep references to 1971 factual and free of blame. The focus is remembrance and gratitude, not hostility.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
