In Thailand, 5 December marks the birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who was born in 1927 and reigned from 1946 to 2016, the longest reign in Thai history. The date is also National Day and Father's Day, as he was widely regarded as the father of the nation. It is a public holiday. Many people wear yellow, children honour their fathers, and candle-lighting ceremonies are held in the evening in his memory.

- GOOD EVENING1 / 5
Good evening, and thank you for being here. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} welcome to this evening of remembrance and gratitude. Tonight we mark Thai National Day and Father's Day, both rooted in the birthday of a king remembered with deep respect. - A REIGN OF SEVENTY YEARS2 / 5
King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was born on 5 December 1927 and reigned from 1946 until 2016, the longest reign in Thai history. He is remembered for his work on rural development and for the philosophy of a sufficiency economy, which still guides many projects across Thailand. - FATHERS AND FAMILIES3 / 5
Today is also Father's Day. Wherever your father is tonight, whether beside you, far away or in your memory, this is a moment to thank him. Children, if you have brought a flower or a card, now is the time to give it.
[CHILDREN PRESENT FLOWERS] - CANDLE LIGHTING4 / 5
As evening falls, people across Thailand light candles in his memory. Please take the candle in front of you as {Guest of honour, title} lights the first flame and passes it on.
[CANDLES ARE LIT IN QUIET]
Thank you. Please keep your candles lit a little longer. - CLOSING5 / 5
Thank you for sharing this evening of reflection. May the light you hold be a reminder of service, of family and of gratitude. Please stay a while, and if you can, call your father, or someone who has been a father to you, tonight.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Do not confuse 5 December with 28 July, the birthday of the reigning King Maha Vajiralongkorn. This day honours the late King Bhumibol, so the tone is reflective rather than festive.
- The canna flower is the traditional Father's Day flower in Thailand. Have some ready at the entrance so children can present one to their fathers or grandfathers during the third card.
- Many guests wear yellow on this day. Display the late King's portrait respectfully on a decorated table, and keep all references to the monarchy formal and free of political comment.
- Not every guest's father is living or nearby. Keep the Father's Day moment gentle and inclusive, as in the template, and avoid activities that single out children whose fathers are absent.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
