Constitution Day, the Día de la Constitución, is a public holiday in Spain on 6 December. It marks the referendum held on that date in 1978, in which voters approved the Constitution that remains in force today. The text defines Spain as a social and democratic state under the rule of law, with a parliamentary monarchy as its political form. An institutional ceremony is held at the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, and many schools hold activities about the Constitution in the days before.

- GOOD MORNING1 / 4
Good morning, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and it's a pleasure to open this gathering of {Organisation} to mark Constitution Day. In a few minutes we will hear part of the Constitution itself, read aloud by one of our own. But first, a little history. - VOTED BY THE PEOPLE2 / 4
On 6 December 1978, Spanish voters went to the polls and approved a new Constitution in a referendum. It sets out the rights and freedoms of every citizen, and the institutions that protect them. It remains in force today, and it is the framework within which the country is governed. - A READING3 / 4
The Constitution belongs to everyone, so it is right to hear it in a familiar voice. Please welcome {Reader's name}, who will read {Article chosen}.
[READING OF THE ARTICLE]
Thank you. Those few lines remind us that rights are written down so that they can be known, taught and shared. - CLOSING4 / 4
The full text of the Constitution is freely available to read online, and it is well worth an evening of anyone's time. Thank you to {Reader's name} for reading, and to all of you for being here. Enjoy the holiday.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Spanish schools are closed on 6 December, so school assemblies are usually held on the last school day before it. Change 'today' in the cards if your event is not on the date.
- Choose a short article for the reading, such as the one on equality before the law, and print it in large type on its own card for the reader.
- Keep the tone civic and non-partisan. Proposals to reform the Constitution are debated in Spain, but this template celebrates the 1978 agreement itself, not any position on changing it.
- With the national holiday on 8 December close behind, many people travel that week, so choose your event date with attendance in mind.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
