Independence Day on 16 December is a public holiday in Kazakhstan. It celebrates the day in 1991 when Kazakhstan declared its independence, the last of the Soviet republics to do so. The day is marked with official ceremonies, concerts and festive gatherings across the country, and Kazakh communities and embassies abroad host celebrations for compatriots and friends.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good evening, friends, and a very warm welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and it is a real pleasure to celebrate Kazakhstan's Independence Day with you. Tonight we look back to a winter's day in 1991, and forward to everything the years since then have made possible. - A NEW STATE2 / 4
On 16 December 1991, Kazakhstan declared its independence, the last of the Soviet republics to do so. A new state began to shape its own future. A whole generation has since grown up in an independent Kazakhstan, and some of them are with us here tonight. - MEMORIES OF INDEPENDENCE3 / 4
Some people in this room remember those days well. I'm delighted to invite {Guest who remembers 1991} to share a few memories of the first days of independence.
[GUEST SHARES MEMORIES]
Thank you so much for taking us back to that winter. - A TOAST4 / 4
Now, please raise your glasses. To Kazakhstan and its people, to those who saw independence begin, and to everyone in this room tonight. Dinner is now served. Thank you for celebrating with {Organisation}, and happy Independence Day!
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- If you include a toast, agree in advance who will give it and keep it short. Offer non-alcoholic drinks, so that every guest can raise a glass.
- Brief your guest speaker beforehand: ask for three to five minutes and suggest a focus, such as where they were at the time or what changed in everyday life.
- Check this year's official holiday calendar, published by the government of Kazakhstan, before choosing your date, to see how the days off fall around Independence Day.
- A dastarkhan, the festive Kazakh table, with dishes such as beshbarmak and baursak, makes the meal feel like a real celebration. Ask community members for recipes or a recommended caterer.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
