Great Union Day, Ziua Marii Uniri, is Romania's National Day and a public holiday on 1 December. It commemorates the Great National Assembly held at Alba Iulia on 1 December 1918, which proclaimed the union of Transylvania with Romania and completed the Great Union of that year. It has been the National Day since 1990. A military parade passes through the Arch of Triumph in Bucharest, and Alba Iulia hosts large celebrations with flags, concerts and traditional food.

- LA MULȚI ANI, ROMÂNIA1 / 4
Good evening, and welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} it's a joy to celebrate Romania's National Day with you. Whether your roots are in Romania or you simply love the country, tonight we gather under one tricolour of blue, yellow and red. - ONE DAY IN ALBA IULIA2 / 4
On 1 December 1918, delegates from across Transylvania gathered in Alba Iulia and proclaimed its union with Romania. Other historical provinces had taken the same step earlier that year. Together, these decisions are remembered as the Great Union, and since 1990 this date has been Romania's National Day. - THE ANTHEM AND THE HORA3 / 4
Please rise for the national anthem, Deșteaptă-te, române.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. At celebrations across Romania, people join hands in a hora, a circle dance with room for everyone. {Musicians} will start the music, and nobody needs to know the steps.
[HORA – GUESTS JOIN THE CIRCLE] - A TOAST TO ROMANIA4 / 4
Please raise your glass. To Romania, to everyone who lives there, and to all Romanians celebrating abroad tonight. La mulți ani! Beans with smoked sausage, the classic dish of this day, are waiting for you. Enjoy the food and the music, and thank you for joining us.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Display the blue, yellow and red tricolour prominently. Invite guests to stand for the anthem, Deșteaptă-te, române, and print the first verse for those who would like to sing.
- Beans with smoked sausage, fasole cu cârnați, are traditionally served at public celebrations on 1 December. If your menu is different, change the reference in the last card.
- La mulți ani, literally 'many years', is the usual festive greeting. Teach it at the start of the evening so that non-Romanian guests can join in the toast.
- Members of Romania's Hungarian community may view 1918 differently. Keep the script celebratory and inclusive, centred on shared heritage, and avoid remarks about other countries or past disputes.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
