Independence Day is a public holiday in Nigeria on 1 October. It marks the day in 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from British rule; the country later became a republic in 1963. The day is marked with official ceremonies, flag-raising, a national broadcast by the President and celebrations by Nigerian communities at home and abroad, where many people dress in the national colours of green and white.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good evening, everyone, and welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and what a joy it is to see so much green and white in one room. Tonight, {Organisation} celebrates Nigeria's Independence Day with friends from near and far. - OUR STORY2 / 4
On 1 October 1960, Nigeria became an independent nation, and the green-white-green flag became the flag of a free country. Since then, Nigerians have carried their music, food, ideas and energy to every corner of the world. Tonight we celebrate all of that, together. - ANTHEM AND PLEDGE3 / 4
Wherever we live, the anthem brings us home. Please rise for the national anthem of Nigeria, and remain standing for the National Pledge.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM, FOLLOWED BY THE NATIONAL PLEDGE]
Thank you. Please be seated, and make sure you have a glass close by. - A TOAST4 / 4
Please raise your glass, whatever is in it. To Nigeria, to her people at home and in the diaspora, and to the next chapter of our story. Happy Independence Day!
[TOAST]
Now, the food is ready and the music is waiting. Enjoy your evening.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Since 2024, Nigeria's national anthem has been Nigeria, We Hail Thee, which replaced Arise, O Compatriots. Check that your recording and printed words are the current version.
- Invite guests to wear green and white, and dress the room in the national colours. A Nigerian flag beside the lectern gives the anthem and pledge a clear focus.
- Nigerian audiences span many languages, regions and faiths. Offer non-alcoholic drinks for the toast, and keep humour free of jokes about any ethnic group.
- Keep speeches short and place the toast just before the meal. Food and music are a big part of a Nigerian celebration, and guests will thank you for not delaying them.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
