Canada Day, on 1 July, marks the anniversary of Confederation in 1867, when the Constitution Act, 1867 united Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada, which was divided into Ontario and Quebec, into one country. Known as Dominion Day until 1982, it is a national holiday. Canadians celebrate with flags, parades, concerts, fireworks, citizenship ceremonies and community festivals, and the largest celebrations take place in Ottawa.

- WELCOME AND BIENVENUE1 / 4
Good afternoon, bonjour, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation}, happy Canada Day. Canada is a country of many stories. Some of your families have roots here going back thousands of years, and some of you arrived last spring. Every one of those stories is welcome here today. - HOW CANADA BEGAN2 / 4
On 1 July 1867, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada came together in Confederation, forming a new country of four provinces. Others joined in the years that followed. Today, Canada is home to First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and to people from every corner of the world. - O CANADA3 / 4
Please rise for our national anthem, O Canada, sung by {Singer or choir}.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you, please be seated. And now, a birthday deserves a cake, so our youngest guests will help with the cutting.
[CAKE CUTTING – APPLAUSE] - ENJOY THE DAY4 / 4
Thank you to our volunteers and partners who made today possible. There is music all afternoon, games for the children and food for everyone, and when it gets dark, at {Fireworks time}, look up for the fireworks. Wear your red and white with pride. Happy Canada Day, and bonne fête du Canada!
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- O Canada can be sung in English, in French or in a bilingual version. Tell your singer which version you want, and print the words so guests can join in.
- Under the Holidays Act, when 1 July falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on 2 July. Check this year's date before booking a venue or performers.
- For many First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, Confederation has a complex history. Many organisers open with a land acknowledgement and keep the tone inclusive, celebrating everyone who calls Canada home.
- A bilingual welcome, even a few words of French, reflects Canada's two official languages and is especially appreciated at public and embassy events.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
