Peru's Independence Day is celebrated on 28 July, at the start of the Fiestas Patrias. It marks the proclamation of independence in Lima by General José de San Martín on 28 July 1821; independence was secured in 1824 after the battles of Junín and Ayacucho. The following day, 29 July, is also a public holiday, with the Great Military Parade in Lima. Homes and buildings display the red and white flag throughout July.

- FELICES FIESTAS PATRIAS1 / 4
Good afternoon, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} it's a great pleasure to celebrate Peru's Independence Day with you. Red and white fill the room today, just as they fill balconies and windows across Peru throughout July. - THE PROCLAMATION IN LIMA2 / 4
On 28 July 1821, General José de San Martín proclaimed Peru's independence in the main square of Lima. Independence was secured a few years later, after the battles of Junín and Ayacucho in 1824. Today, Peruvians at home and abroad mark this day with pride. - ANTHEM AND GUEST OF HONOUR3 / 4
Before we continue, please rise for the national anthem of Peru.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. Please take your seats. I now invite {Guest of honour, title}, who has kindly agreed to share a few thoughts on what Peru means to them.
[GUEST SPEECH] - A TASTE OF PERU4 / 4
Thank you. Peruvians are rightly proud of their cuisine, and tonight our kitchen has prepared {Dishes} for you. Please enjoy them with the music and good company. Thank you all for being here, and felices Fiestas Patrias.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Peruvians traditionally display the national flag at home throughout July. Decorate in red and white, and place the flag in a position of honour near the lectern.
- Many Peruvians sing the national anthem with great feeling. Print the chorus for international guests so they can follow along and join in.
- Peru's coast, Andes and Amazon each have their own music and food. Including more than one region in the programme helps every guest feel represented.
- Felices Fiestas Patrias is the usual greeting in late July. Teach it at the start of the event so international guests can use it with their Peruvian friends and colleagues.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
