Colombia's Independence Day is celebrated on 20 July. It commemorates the events of 1810 in Santa Fe de Bogotá, when a quarrel over a request to borrow a flower vase, remembered as the Florero de Llorente, sparked protests that led to the creation of a local governing junta. Independence was secured after further years of struggle, including the Battle of Boyacá in 1819. It is a public holiday, marked with a military parade, flags and celebrations by Colombian communities worldwide.

- A COLOURFUL WELCOME1 / 4
Good evening, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} it's a pleasure to celebrate Colombia's Independence Day with you. Tonight is for a country of mountains, coffee, two coastlines and wonderful music, and for the people who carry it with them wherever they go. - A STORY ABOUT A VASE2 / 4
Colombian independence has an unusual beginning. On 20 July 1810, in Santa Fe de Bogotá, a request to borrow a flower vase from a Spanish merchant ended in a quarrel. The quarrel became a protest, and the protest led to a local governing junta. Independence was secured after the Battle of Boyacá in 1819. - ANTHEM AND CUMBIA3 / 4
Please stand for the national anthem of Colombia.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Thank you. Please be seated. And now, a rhythm born on the Caribbean coast. Please welcome {Dancers or band} with a cumbia, and feel free to clap along.
[CUMBIA PERFORMANCE] - TO COLOMBIA4 / 4
Thank you to {Dancers or band}. Now please raise a glass, or a cup of good Colombian coffee. To Colombia, to its many regions and their music, and to every Colombian here tonight. ¡Viva Colombia! Enjoy the evening, and thank you for celebrating with us.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Colombia has a second national holiday linked to independence on 7 August, the anniversary of the Battle of Boyacá. Mention both if your community celebrates them together.
- The yellow band fills the top half of the flag, above equal bands of blue and red. Check that the flag is hung the right way up before guests arrive.
- Colombia's anthem has many verses, and usually only the chorus and first verse are sung. Print those words for guests; many Colombians abroad will sing along with feeling.
- Colombia's regions have very different music and food. Mixing a cumbia with a vallenato, or arepas with empanadas, helps guests from every region feel represented.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
