National Day, widely known as Double Ten Day, is celebrated in Taiwan on 10 October, the tenth day of the tenth month. It commemorates the Wuchang Uprising of 10 October 1911, which began the revolution that ended imperial rule in China and led to the founding of the Republic of China on 1 January 1912. It is a public holiday. The main celebration takes place in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei, and a national fireworks display is hosted by a different city or county each year.

- A DOUBLE TEN WELCOME1 / 4
Good evening, and welcome to {Venue}. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} it's a pleasure to celebrate Double Ten Day with you. Two tens, one date and a room full of friends: it already feels like a good evening. - WHY DOUBLE TEN2 / 4
The name comes from the date, the tenth day of the tenth month. On 10 October 1911, an uprising in Wuchang began the revolution that ended imperial rule and led to the founding of the Republic of China in 1912. In Taiwan, the day brings a ceremony in Taipei and fireworks at night. - ON WITH THE SHOW3 / 4
Every good celebration needs a performance, so please give a warm welcome to {Performers}.
[APPLAUSE – PERFORMANCE BEGINS]
Thank you for that wonderful performance. Before the buffet opens, please make sure everyone at your table has a glass in hand. - A TOAST4 / 4
Please raise your glass. To friendship, to the communities that bring us together, and to everyone celebrating Double Ten, here and around the world. Cheers. The buffet is now open and the music will continue, so please stay, enjoy yourselves, and thank you for joining us.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Guests may hold very different views on cross-strait relations and political status. Keep the script celebratory, historical and cultural, and leave out current politics and comparisons with other places.
- Whether to include a flag-raising or anthem depends on your host organisation and venue. Follow their protocol, and confirm the order of the programme with them well in advance.
- In some years Double Ten falls close to the Mid-Autumn Festival. If the dates are near, mooncakes or pomelos, both popular in Taiwan at that festival, make a welcome addition to the buffet.
- Explain the name early. Many international guests enjoy learning that Double Ten simply refers to the tenth day of the tenth month, and it makes an easy opening line.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
