Mashujaa Day, or Heroes' Day, is a public holiday in Kenya on 20 October. Mashujaa is the Swahili word for heroes. The day honours everyone who has contributed to the nation, from those who fought for independence to people who serve their communities today. It was previously known as Kenyatta Day and took its current name under the 2010 Constitution. It is marked with official celebrations and with events that recognise people who have served Kenya.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good morning, everyone, and karibuni. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} I welcome you to our Mashujaa Day celebration. Today is about saying thank you, out loud and in public, to people who have given a great deal to Kenya and to this community. - WHO OUR HEROES ARE2 / 4
Mashujaa means heroes. We remember those who fought for Kenya's independence, and the many who have served since in quieter ways: teachers, nurses, farmers, volunteers and neighbours. Heroes are not only found in history books. Some of them are sitting in this room. - HONOURING OUR OWN3 / 4
This year we are proud to recognise {Honouree's name} for {Their contribution}. Please come forward to receive your certificate.
[PRESENTATION AND APPLAUSE]
Thank you for everything you have done. You remind us that heroism often looks like steady, patient service. - CLOSING4 / 4
To all our honourees, asanteni sana. And to everyone here, a small challenge: as you leave today, think of one person whose service to others deserves thanks, and tell them this week. Happy Mashujaa Day, and thank you for coming.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Confirm each honouree's name, title and the wording of their citation beforehand. Read each citation in a sentence or two, and repeat the presentation card for every honouree.
- Recognise a mix of people from different ages, communities and walks of life, and avoid framing the day around any single political figure or party.
- If veterans of the independence struggle or their families are present, acknowledge them by name early in the programme and offer them reserved seats.
- Prepare the certificates in order, agree who hands them over and mark where honourees stand for photographs, so the presentation moves smoothly.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
