Austrian National Day, the Nationalfeiertag, is celebrated on 26 October. On that day in 1955, the Austrian Parliament passed the law on the country's permanent neutrality, shortly after the last occupying troops had left under the State Treaty signed earlier that year. It is a public holiday. In Vienna, the Federal Army presents itself on Heldenplatz, and government buildings, including the Parliament, often open their doors to visitors.

- WILLKOMMEN1 / 4
Good evening, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and it's a pleasure to host this evening on behalf of {Organisation}. Tonight we celebrate Austrian National Day with friends of Austria from many backgrounds and, as you might expect in Austrian company, with music. - THE STORY OF THIS DATE2 / 4
In 1955, Austria's State Treaty was signed, and by the autumn the last foreign troops had left. On 26 October that year, Parliament declared the country's permanent neutrality. After ten years of occupation, Austria once again stood as a free and independent state. - A MOMENT FOR MUSIC3 / 4
It would hardly be an Austrian celebration without music. Please welcome {Musicians}.
[MUSICAL INTERLUDE]
Thank you. Please now rise for the national anthem of Austria.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Please be seated. - CLOSING4 / 4
Thank you to {Musicians} and to all of you for joining us. Whether your ties to Austria come through family, work, study or a love of its mountains and coffee houses, you are very welcome here. Enjoy the rest of the evening.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- The anthem is Land der Berge, Land am Strome. Its lyrics were changed in 2012 to mention daughters as well as sons, so make sure you print the current version.
- Neutrality is central to the day's history, but its future is debated. Present it as a historical fact and avoid taking positions on current security or political questions.
- Red-white-red decorations and the Austrian flag set the scene well. Keep the evening civic and cultural; parades and displays belong to the official programme in Vienna.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
