National Day, Hari Kebangsaan, also known as Merdeka Day, is a public holiday in Malaysia on 31 August. It celebrates the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British rule in 1957, proclaimed by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister, at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. Celebrations include a midnight countdown, a national parade, and the Jalur Gemilang flown from homes, cars and buildings. Each year's celebration has an official theme and logo.

- SELAMAT HARI KEBANGSAAN1 / 5
Selamat pagi and good morning, everyone. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} welcome to our National Day celebration. With so many Jalur Gemilang in the room, it already feels like a festival. Thank you for coming, and selamat Hari Kebangsaan. - STADIUM MERDEKA2 / 5
On 31 August 1957, the Federation of Malaya became independent. At Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaimed independence to a packed crowd, and the word Merdeka, meaning independence, rang out across the stadium. It has been the heartbeat of this day ever since. - NEGARAKU3 / 5
Please rise for our national anthem, Negaraku.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM – NEGARAKU]
Thank you, please be seated. Our theme this year is {This year's official theme}. It reminds us that building the nation is work for all of us, in every state and every community. - THREE CHEERS OF MERDEKA4 / 5
Before we enjoy the food and performances, let's echo the word heard in that stadium in 1957. On my signal, all together, three times: Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!
[HOST LEADS THE CHEER – GUESTS JOIN IN]
Wonderful. That is the sound of National Day. - CLOSING5 / 5
Please stay for {Cultural performance} and the food, and do take a photo with the flag on your way out. Thank you for celebrating with us, and happy National Day to every one of you.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- 31 August marks the independence of Malaya. Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaya and Singapore to form Malaysia in 1963, which Malaysia Day celebrates, so word the script with that distinction in mind if guests come from those states.
- Use the year's official theme and logo, announced by the government in advance, on your banners and slides, and in the third card.
- Everyone stands for Negaraku. Fly the Jalur Gemilang correctly and in good condition; flags often go up on homes and offices weeks before the day.
- Serve halal food and offer non-alcoholic drinks so that all guests can share in the celebration comfortably.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
