Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day is a public holiday in Czechia on 17 November, also observed internationally as International Students' Day. It recalls two events. In 1939, the Nazi occupiers closed Czech universities after student protests, executing student leaders and arresting many others. In 1989, a student march in Prague marking that anniversary was broken up by police, sparking the Velvet Revolution. People light candles and lay flowers at memorials, especially on Národní třída in Prague.

- THANK YOU FOR COMING1 / 4
Good afternoon. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {University or organisation} welcome to this commemoration of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day. Today belongs above all to students: those who stood up before us, and those sitting in this room. - TWO NOVEMBERS, FIFTY YEARS APART2 / 4
In 1939, students in occupied Prague protested, and the Nazi authorities answered by closing Czech universities and executing student leaders. Fifty years later, in 1989, students marched to remember them. Police broke up the march, and within days a peaceful revolution was under way. - A STUDENT VOICE3 / 4
It is fitting that a student speaks next. Please welcome {Student speaker}, who will share what freedom and democracy mean to a new generation.
[STUDENT SPEAKER]
Thank you. Those words remind us that freedom is not only remembered; it is practised, every day. - BEFORE WE LEAVE4 / 4
On Národní třída in Prague today, people light candles and lay flowers. You will find candles by the door, and you are welcome to light one on your way out. First, let us take a quiet moment together.
[MOMENT OF REFLECTION]
Thank you for being here.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Outside Czechia, many guests know 17 November as International Students' Day. At international universities, explain its Prague origins briefly so the two meanings come together.
- Some guests lived through 1989, and views on the years since differ. Keep the script factual and avoid references to current parties, politicians or political debates.
- Keep the atmosphere reflective rather than festive: candles, flowers, the Czech flag and short speeches suit the day better than a reception with music.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
