Czech Statehood Day, Den české státnosti, is a public holiday in Czechia on 28 September. It is the feast day of St Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia and patron saint of the Czech lands, who is traditionally linked to the beginnings of Czech statehood. The day is marked with a national pilgrimage to Stará Boleslav, where he was killed, and with flowers and wreaths laid at his statue on Wenceslas Square in Prague.

- WELCOME1 / 4
Good afternoon. My name is {Your name}, and on behalf of {Organisation} thank you for joining us on Czech Statehood Day. We gather quietly today, to reflect on a tradition of statehood that reaches back more than a thousand years. - ST WENCESLAS2 / 4
On 28 September, Czechs remember St Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia, who was killed in Stará Boleslav in the tenth century. Over time he became a symbol of the Czech lands and their statehood. His statue on Wenceslas Square has stood at the centre of many of the country's defining moments. - LAYING OF FLOWERS3 / 4
In that spirit, I invite {Representative} to lay flowers on behalf of all of us. Please stand, and let us share a moment of quiet reflection.
[FLOWERS LAID – ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE]
Thank you. Please be seated. - CLOSING4 / 4
Statehood is not only about borders and institutions. It is also about the language, the culture and the sense of responsibility we pass on to one another. Thank you for being here today. Please feel free to stay a while.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- St Wenceslas is a saint in the Christian tradition, but Statehood Day is a civic holiday. Keep the wording historical and inclusive, so guests of all beliefs feel comfortable.
- Keep the programme quiet and dignified: no applause cues, simple flowers or a small wreath, the Czech flag on display and, if there is music, something calm.
- If you include the national anthem, Kde domov můj, place it after the moment of silence and print the words for guests who are not Czech speakers.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
