Constitution Day, or Święto Narodowe Trzeciego Maja, is a public holiday in Poland on 3 May. It celebrates the Constitution adopted on 3 May 1791 by the parliament of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, often described as the first modern constitution in Europe. It follows Labour Day on 1 May and Flag Day on 2 May, and many people take a long spring break around these days, known as majówka. Celebrations include flag-raising, concerts, school events and official ceremonies in Warsaw.

- DZIEŃ DOBRY1 / 4
Good morning, and welcome. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {School or organisation} I'm delighted to celebrate Constitution Day with you. White and red flags are everywhere this week, and with good reason: today marks a proud chapter in Polish history. - A CONSTITUTION AHEAD OF ITS TIME2 / 4
On 3 May 1791, the parliament of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth adopted a new Constitution to reform and strengthen the state. It is often described as the first modern constitution in Europe. It was in force only briefly, but its ideas outlived it and are still celebrated more than two centuries later. - OUR PERFORMANCE3 / 4
Our {Performers} have prepared poems and songs for today. Please give them your full attention.
[STUDENT PERFORMANCE]
Thank you. Please now stand for the national anthem, Mazurek Dąbrowskiego.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM]
Please be seated. - ENJOY THE MAJÓWKA4 / 4
Thank you to our performers and to everyone who helped prepare today. A constitution is more than a document: it is a promise that citizens make to one another. Enjoy the long weekend, fly your flag, and thank you for celebrating with us.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- In Polish schools, the celebration often takes the form of an akademia, a short programme of poems, songs and readings by pupils; the third card leaves room for this.
- Because 1 to 3 May often become a long weekend, schools and workplaces usually hold their celebration on the last working day before it; adjust 'today' accordingly.
- Display the flag with white above red, and ask guests to stand for Mazurek Dąbrowskiego. Print the words of the first verse and chorus for international guests.
- Keep the history positive and non-partisan: the day celebrates a shared constitutional tradition, not today's political debates about the constitution.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
