Greek Independence Day is celebrated on 25 March. It marks the start of the War of Independence in 1821, the struggle that led to the founding of the modern Greek state. The date is also the Feast of the Annunciation in the Orthodox Church, so the day carries both national and religious meaning. It is a public holiday. Schools hold student parades, a military parade takes place in Athens, and many families eat fried salt cod with garlic sauce, bakaliaros skordalia.

- CHRONIA POLLA1 / 4
Good morning, and chronia polla to you all. I'm {Your name}, and on behalf of {School or community} welcome to our celebration of Greek Independence Day. Blue and white flags, proud families and pupils in traditional dress: this is how Greeks everywhere mark 25 March. - THE STRUGGLE BEGINS2 / 4
In 1821, Greeks rose up to win their freedom after centuries of Ottoman rule. The struggle lasted years and cost many lives, but it led to an independent Greek state. Today we honour the courage of those who began it, and the language and culture they kept alive. - THE FLAG PROCESSION3 / 4
Across Greece today, pupils march with the flag through their towns. Ours will now carry it through the hall, led by {Flag bearer}. Please stand as they pass.
[FLAG PROCESSION]
Please remain standing for the national anthem, the Hymn to Liberty.
[NATIONAL ANTHEM] - ZITO I ELLADA4 / 4
Thank you, everyone, please be seated. A special thank-you to our pupils, their teachers and the parents who prepared the costumes. Whatever your roots, today's story of freedom belongs to you too. Enjoy the refreshments, chronia polla, and zito i Ellada: long live Greece.
Red is used only for names, titles, organisations, dates, times and section headings. Replace the words in {curly brackets} with your own details; lines in [SQUARE BRACKETS] are stage directions and are not read aloud.
How to adapt it
- Pupils often wear traditional costume: the foustanella for boys and the Amalia dress for girls. Thank the families who prepared them, and give the children a clear role in the programme.
- The words of the Hymn to Liberty come from a poem by Dionysios Solomos. Print the opening verses for international guests, so they can follow while others sing.
- The date is also the Feast of the Annunciation, and many families attend church in the morning. Plan your timing around this, and keep religious references brief and inclusive.
- The day recalls a war against Ottoman rule. Focus on Greek freedom and heritage rather than on any other nation, so that guests of every background feel welcome.
Print and rehearse
“Edit and print these cards” opens the script in the free cue card maker, where you can choose A5, 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 inch cards, print several per sheet with cut lines or export PDF, PowerPoint and Word, and rehearse full screen in practice mode. To write your own programme around it, see how to write an MC script and the run of show template.
